Screening: how junk is handled and how to review it

Screening moves likely junk out of your inbox and into a Screened folder or label, not straight to Spam. You can review it any time on the Screened page, put back anything that should not have been screened, and nothing is reported to your mail provider as spam until a grace period passes with no rescue.

The three modes

Set this in Settings, under Junk screening.

ModeWhat happens
OffNothing is screened.
Suggest (default)Your agent sees which messages look like junk, but nothing moves on its own.
AutoLikely junk moves to a Screened folder or label automatically.

Screening never touches mail from your VIPs, anyone you have replied to, your own inbox address, or a sender you have already told it is fine.

Review and rescue

Open Screened, or ask your AI to review it, to see what was moved: the sender, subject, when it was screened, and why. Choose Rescue to put a message back in your inbox and tell screening that sender is fine from now on. Choose Report for anything plainly junk: it reports the message as spam to your provider and remembers that sender's domain.

The grace period

A screened message is never reported as spam right away. It waits out a grace period (7 days by default, set it in Settings) so you have time to notice and rescue anything that should not have been screened. Only after that period, with no rescue, does it go through the same spam report a person would send by hand.

Help improve screening

Settings has a switch, off by default, to share which screening rule caught a message and whether you rescued it. This never includes the message itself, its sender, or your account: see Privacy for what is and is not shared.
