How do I connect an IMAP inbox to Claude or ChatGPT?

Create an app password in your mail service's security settings, if it offers one.
On the Inboxes page, add your address. We look up your mail server. Check it, then choose Connect and enter the password on the private form.
Add Inbox Triage to your AI app once. In Claude, add a custom connector with https://getinboxtriage.com/mcp and sign in. In ChatGPT, turn on Developer mode (paid plans) and create an app with the same address. In Claude Code, run one command. See the steps for each app.

Yahoo or AOL?

They connect over IMAP too, with an app password. See Yahoo and AOL Mail in your AI app.

Is your domain on Google Workspace or Microsoft 365?

Then it should connect with Google or Microsoft sign-in instead. We check where your domain's mail goes and pick the right one. You can also choose it yourself. See custom domains on Workspace or Microsoft 365.

What your AI can do

Read your mail, and search the whole mailbox on your server.
Show what needs you first, with your VIPs at the top.
Archive, move to Trash, or mark as junk. Each change can be undone for 7 days.
Star (flag) messages.
Find newsletters and unsubscribe, after you approve it.
Write replies in your Drafts folder, and send one after you turn sending on and approve it.

What it cannot do

See your password. You enter it on a private page. We test it, then store it encrypted. If the test fails, nothing is kept.
Send without your approval.
Connect to a mail server on a private network, such as one at home behind your router.

Questions about IMAP email in your AI app

What are the IMAP settings for Fastmail, Yahoo, or Zoho?

Fastmail uses imap.fastmail.com, Yahoo Mail uses imap.mail.yahoo.com, and Zoho Mail uses imap.zoho.com, all on port 993. Pick the service under Common services and we fill these in.

What if my mail host is not listed?

Enter your address and we look for the server the way mail apps do. If we cannot find it, enter the IMAP server from your host's help pages. It is often mail.yourdomain.com on port 993.

Which password do I use?

Use an app password if your service offers one. Many services, including Yahoo and Fastmail, require one for other apps. We test it before we store it.

Can my AI search my whole mailbox?

Yes. Search runs on your mail server, so it reaches older mail too. Spam and Trash are left out.

My domain is on Google Workspace. Should I use IMAP?

No. Connect it with Google sign-in. We usually detect this, or you can choose Google yourself when you add the inbox.
